My Mom’s Simple Fruit Chaat Recipe

Salaam everyone! Ramadan Kareem. Hope all is well during these difficult times.

Today, I made my Mom’s simple Fruit Chaat recipe for Iftar. Fruit Chaat is also known as Spiced Fruit Salad and Iftar is the meal we take when opening our fast during Ramadan.

Fruit Chaat is hugely popular during Ramadan in South Asia, as it is a great way to get in those vitamins and healthy sugars with a bit of a spice kick. The reason why the name has Chaat is due to the spice mix used called Chaat Masala. Chaat Masala consists of: Salt, Red Chilli, Paprika, Coriander, Cinnamon, Ginger, Aniseed, Long Black Pepper, Cumin, Green Cardamom, Black Pepper, Clove Mace, Green Mango, Carom, Citric Acid, and Asafoetida. Talk about the list of spices :o. I usually use the Shan brand one.

Enough of the history lesson… Let’s get to making!

Ingredients:

  • 1 Large Orange
  • 1 Small Bergamot Orange or Sweet Lime
  • 2 Apples
  • 4 Bananas
  • 1/2 Pomegranate
  • 1 Mango
  • 3 tbsp Cane Sugar
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 1 tbsp Black Pepper
  • 1 tbsp Chaat Masala

Preparation:

  • Wash and dry all the fruits
  • Cut the bergamot orange in half and leave aside
  • Peel and Chop the other fruits into small pieces and add to a big container
  • Squeeze the juice from the bergamot orange and pour on fruits (remove any seeds)
  • Add cane sugar, salt, black pepper and chaat masala
  • Mix with hands
  • Serve chilled or at room temperature

Enjoy!

You can also put other fruits in your Fruit Chaat like: papaya, grapes, guava, pear, peach, sweet potato and more! You can even add chickpeas ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Let me know your favourite food for Ramadan.
